Stimulation is necessary
in baby squirrels whose eyes have not opened. This is because the
baby has not developed the strength in the hip muscles that are
used for bladder control. To stimulate, gently tickle the
genitals with a warm moist cotton ball or cloth. Don't rub
the area raw. You may get a few drops or a steady little stream.
You may not get anything at all if the baby is dehydrated.
In a properly hydrated baby, expect to get urine after almost every
feeding and maybe one or two bowel movements a day. Once the
eyes are open, this is not usually necessary, but you may want to
continue to keep the incubator from getting too messy or to monitor
the color of the urine. The color of the urine and color and
consistency of the stool are a good way of determining the health
of the baby. The urine should be clear to almost clear. The
stool should be firm formed pellets, dark yellow to dark reddish
orange. If the stool is light yellow and runny, you
are probably overfeeding. See Common
problems . If the the urine is dark and tea colored, there is
probably internal bleeding ( see a veterinarian ).
